Ankle Sprain

An ankle sprain is one of the most common injuries that can occur. This happens when the muscle tissue around the ankle is stretched or torn. With more sever cases, the whole muscle ligament can be completely torn off and even cracks in the bone. It is important to consult a GP with more severe cases.

Symptoms
Sprains can be very painful and they can happen almost instantly with either impact or wrong footing. It is easy to tell if you have sprained your ankle as it will be very painful to walk and put pressure on it.

You may see swelling and bruising around the ankle, making it very hard to move your ankle.

Treatment
There is no quick cure for an ankle sprain. You must make sure to:

  • Rest, try not to use your ankle to much then gradually, as you recover, start with slow pace walking.

  • Ice packs or a frozen bag of peas can help reduce swelling and bruising. Make sure to wrap ice in a cloth then apply to the swelling or bruising.

  • Compress the injury by wrapping it in a bandage or some sort of ankle brace. This will provide extra support and reduce swelling

  • Elevate your ankle and keep it supported to help it recover and reduce the pain.

Applying heat to the injury such as a hot bath can help sooth the injury as it encourages blood flow. If there is still swelling, do not use this treatment.

Do not go back into sports till you have fully recovered from this injury. A sprain can easily be aggravated and made worse if you have not fully recovered.

Pain killers from your closest Pharmacy can help reduce the pain but not help you heal faster.

If the sprain still persists after 7-10 weeks, consult a doctor.
