Chip Shot
The chip shot is all about the goal keeper’s position. If the keeper is on his goal line there is no point in chipping the ball. The chip requires you to have good vision and awareness. It is good to chip the ball when the keeper comes out off his line to close.
Chipping the ball is all about getting enough power in the chip to lift the ball over the keeper. Putting in too much power will most likely cause the ball to fly way over the goal. The chip also needs to have enough power to be able to loop over defenders and the goal keeper.
Under hitting the ball would just cause the ball to fly right into the keepers arms. This could be worse then over hitting the ball as it could leave your team open for a counter if the keeper throws the ball out quickly.
You should only attempt a chip if the keeper is either off his goal line or the keeper comes out to close you down in a 1v1 situation. Chipping does not work as effectively if the goal keeper is stood on their line.
To execute the chip properly, one must position themselves over the ball just as you are about to shoot.
Plant your non-kicking foot 6 to 10 inches to the side of the ball, and with your kicking foot; hit underneath the ball to elevate it.
Remember to keep your body over the ball with your arms out for balance.
Trying to execute a shot when you are unbalanced could cause the shot to go off target. If you are running at pace, remember to slow yourself down before you execute the chip.
