The Slide Tackle
Generally speaking, you should always try to stay on your feet. Even if you are on the floor for a few seconds, you are out of the game.
Therefore you should only commit yourself to a slide tackle if you are certain that you will win the challenge or if the situation gets desperate and the opposition has a chance on goal.
Most sliding challenges are made from behind. Defenders must be very careful and not make contact with the attackers leg otherwise they'll concede a free kick.
It is best to challenge for the ball using the outside leg, the leg that is furthest away from the attacker. This gives a stronger tackle.
Its not too difficult to win the ball from a sliding challenge but winning possession isn't quite so easy.
Best thing to do is to just knock the ball from under the attackers foot, putting the ball out of play or to your own team-mate and eliminating the threat.
To perform the slide tack properly, you must make sure not to make the tackle from too far behind the opponent.
while at running speed, throw your weight down to your back side and hook one leg forward and round.
If the timing is correct, your hooking leg should make contact with the ball. Cradle the ball with your foot to try and win possession.
