Sweeper
The sweeper is the player that plays behind the defensive line. As the name suggest they clean up balls if the opponent manages to break the line.
This position is a much more versatile type of defender. Former German captain Franz Beckenbauer is widely considered as one of the best and inventor of this role.
To play this role, position yourself 10 yards in front of your keeper. Never go forward to attack as this will put you out of position.
It takes time to get back into position and this could be costly for the team! Be on the alert for any lose balls. You are not just covering for the centre halfs but also for the full backs!
- Being able to read the opponents passes is a must!
- Being fast helps as you may need to run up and down the defensive line
- Good tacking ability is needed to take the ball off your opponents
If your opponent managers to break on the left or right side you’re going to have to help your full-backs defend. It is ideal to be fast when playing this position but it is not important.
Being able to read passes and putting a good tackle in is more important. Sometimes you may be expected to start up attacks so a bit of skill is needed for this role. It is always helpful to be able to attack as well as defend.
