Wing Forward

The wing forward is similar to left/right Midfielders. They are more attacking and considered as a forward playing more in the wider areas. They do very little defending and like to attack more.

Managers like to play the formation 4-3-3, playing the Wingers in a final third. Manager could also play the 4-4-2 formation using the wingers to attack more. The majority of wingers possess good speed, dribbling, crossing and shooting ability as well as the tendency to attempt to take players on instead of opting to pass around them.

Wingers need decent speed because they need to be quick to be able out run the full backs. They also need to run on to through balls and cover the pitch in fast time.

Good dribbling skills are needed so they have good control running the line. This enables them to be able to take on full backs whilst still running with speed.

They like to dribble at their opponents and take the ball around them. For crossing they need to supply crosses to there team mates in the box.

Wingers will not always be able to get the better of the defenders so taking the ball all the way across the touchline is sometimes the only choice you have.

Being able to supply a good cross into the box too team-mates opens up your attacking options. It keeps the defenders guessing on whether you will cross, or cut in and shoot.

Wingers sometimes find themselves in good positions on the edge of the box so should be confident with shooting at goal.

If you want to learn how to play this position look at players like Cristiano Ronaldo , Arjen Robben , Robinho and Frank Ribery.
